Writing comments that don't get you in trouble
The best report card comments are specific, constructive and forward-looking. "Good student" tells parents nothing; "Shows strong number sense when working with fractions, and would benefit from checking work before turning it in" gives them something to act on. This generator builds comments from that principle: a strength + a growth area + a concrete next step.
Three rules
- Start positive — every comment opens with a genuine strength, even for struggling students.
- Frame growth as behavior, not identity — "completes homework inconsistently" beats "is lazy".
- End with a partnership ask — "Please encourage nightly reading at home" invites the parent in.
Using the generator
Each click produces a fresh combination from a curated phrase bank (strength + growth + next step). Mix and match until it sounds like you — the generator is a starting draft, your voice is the final edit. For grade-related calculations, see the Class Average and Rubric tools.
